While I acknowledge and fully understand why the drainage work in Muston Road is necessary, I do not think the planners for Yorkshire Water are aware of the consequences of the road closures on the small businesses, especially those situated near the Somerfield supermarket.
After only two weeks the takings at the newsagents and the butchers are already more than 50 per cent down and there is no way small shopkeepers can sustain these drops in revenue. By the time the road is fully open again these businesses will literally have had to shut up shop.
Passing trade is now non-existent, and customers who cannot walk are getting their cars out and are travelling shorter distances to other outlets.
Compensation for these businesses is not going to help to bring back the customers who have by now changed their routines.
Would it not be possible at this late stage for Yorkshire Water to consider light traffic using Wharfedale or Grange Avenue once the work has passed these entrances?
I am sure this would help to bring back some of the lost trade.
