Surprise at claims of school vandalism

during the 38 years I have lived in The Croft, and my house is directly next to the rear entrance of Filey Junior School, I have never heard of any of the damages listed in Mr Hadden's letter (Viewpoint, June 6)..
This does not reflect any lack of interest on my part since I have often spoken with Mr Hadden’s two predecessors, the then headmaster and several teachers.

Obviously, the comprehensive view from my house of the rear of the school would suggest t
he damage he listed all took place at the front and towards the playing field end of the premises. If so, this would vindicate the need for a fence across the playing fields, although one could question if such a fence would prohibit vandals entering from Scarborough Road.

I am puzzled by the report of damage to staff cars in the car park since that area is within eyesight and earshot of my house and any sound of damage after 6pm would be heard in my lounge. There are rarely any vehicles there at that hour and the area is brightly lit by sound sensitive floodlights when darkness falls.

I remember the theft of computers from the school and I remember the “alleged gunman” event which took place during non-school hours when a workman employed by the authority, going about his business with an electric drill in his hand, was reported by a civic-minded citizen as a gunman! The really good thing about that incident was we had a demonstration of the high-speed efficiency of our local police force.

No explanation of these incidents was given to us by the education authority. After all, we are only neighbours who were a little upset and dismayed, albeit only briefly, in the second case when laughter was more an after effect.

Finally, my concern for the school is that the drawings do not indicate any gates in the fences other than at the front entrance. At the moment The Croft fence contains two gates at either end. They are badly rusted and frail but allow staff cars entry to the car park and would, in an emergency allow the children a quick exit to a road which is not too busy outside school hours.

Is this omission in the drawings accidental or deliberate? Both gates are closed and padlocked daily at around 5-6pm.
