Approval for parking proposals

CONTROVERSIAL new parking charges in Filey are set to be rubberstamped - despite an impassioned plea from town councillors.

Scarborough Council cabinet chiefs will meet next week to discuss an increase in permits for Filey Country Park to £94.

The move represents a £4 rise and will still allow motorists to park in West Avenue and the Country Park.

However, Filey Town Council had called for a reduction in the cost of permits for residents using the Country Park car park, with Cllr John Haxby saying at a previous meeting that the move “stuck in the craw.”

He said: “There is very little public open space in Filey that people can go without incurring parking costs.

“For them to keep ripping us off up there sticks in the craw.”

However, Brian Bennett, Scarborough Council’s head of tourism and culture countered the argument.

He said: “The proposed charge of £94 for eight months parking represents a monthly charge of £11.75 or a daily equivalent for the eight months of 38 pence per day for unlimited parking on either car park.

“This is already a considerable discount on the existing charges for parking on either of these car parks.”

If approved, the parking changes will come into effect from April 1.
