AS many as 40 people found their way to the children's maze in Crescent Gardens to celebrate the official opening of Filey's newest attraction last Saturday.
Youngster Edward Head, of Scarborough, did the honours after winning a prize draw of everyone who sponsored a brick.

Chairman of the Friends of Filey Parks Linda Cooke said: "He was a very personable young man, and we let him go on the maze first.

"There were lots of children enjoying it and some of them were still there after we came back from a cup of tea and a bun. We were really pleased, because it was a lovely day and we hope the maze continues to be well used."

Mrs Cooke said the children also enjoyed identifying the pieces of mosaic they had completed when the artwork at the centre of the maze was unveiled.

A few days later, there was another celebration as the Green Flag was hoisted over the gardens.

Mrs Cooke said: "It's a great achievement, and we'll be starting off again soon to apply for next year's flag."

Like the Blue Flag for Britain's best beaches, the flag has to be applied for every year.

The award was given to Filey's Glen and Crescent Gardens in recognition of the gardens' high standards and the degree of community involvement in developing them.
