A PAIR of former marine biology students are planning to launch a new eco-action group with a clean-up on Filey Beach tomorrow.
Natalie Squires and Chris Barrett have created a new voluntary society called Marine EcoAction, which is affiliated with the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust and aims to promote marine conservation in the local area.

Chris said: "The society encourages pu
blic involvement to help to raise marine awareness first-hand.

"Natalie and I are founding members, currently based in Scarborough, although many of our proposed activities extend to Filey and as far afield as Flamborough. We intend to make Filey beach clean-ups a regular, perhaps quarterly, event."

Both Chris and Natalie studied coastal marine biology at the Scarborough campus of the University of Hull and have stayed in the area ever since.

Tomorrow's beach clean is intended to last two hours and is open to anyone interested. Participants are asked to meet outside Filey Sailing Club at 1.30pm, an hour before low tide.

After the collection, Marine EcoAction will sort the rubbish accordingly, aiming to recycle the majority, and a report will be written and sent to the Wildlife Trust, the Marine Conservation Society and any members of the public who helped out during the clean-up.

Children are also welcome, although the organisers advise that under-16s should be accompanied by adults. All cleaning equipment will be provided by Scarborough Council.

For more information or to confirm participation, e-mail MarineEcoAction@hotmail. co.uk or call 07510 270228.
