MEMBERS of Filey Lions Club have extended a helping hand to organisers of the Filey Methodist Church Festival of Music.
The second annual event gets under way on Friday May 23 and runs until Sunday June 1, with a full programme of events every day.

Highlights include Saints Alive, a Christian musical by Roger Jones, 3 Tenors with The Riviera Brass Quintet, the Leeds Gilbert and Sullivan Society and a selection of home-grown talent, including Filey Fishermen’s Choir and staff and students of Filey School.

The Lions are sponsoring Simply Brass at the bandstand in Crescent Gardens at 2.30pm on the first Sunday – or inside the church if it is wet.

Handing over a cheque this week, Lions club president Chris Megginson said: “We want to support the music festival because it’s very important to everyone locally. They’re doing well to raise their own funds and we wanted to make a contribution.”

Festival secretary Peter Hazledine said preparations were going well, with the only minor hitch the withdrawal of the original soprano for the Last Night of the Festival concert.

Mr Hazledine said: “She couldn’t come, but we’ve now got Julia Sinclair, who is a soprano from Scarborough who will be coming back from a holiday that morning to sing for us in the evening.”

She will be accompanied on the piano by Sue Hartley.

Mr Hazledine said they had done a lot of publicity for the festival and were now looking for the support of local people who have the option of buying a £25 season ticket to cover all 22 concerts. Tickets are also available on the door for individual concerts, with a box office operating at the Methodist Church.
