RECYCLING of rubbish in the Filey and Scarborough area has almost doubled since last autumn.
When the new alternate weekly collection system was introduced last October, Scarborough Council’s recycling rate was just 18 per cent.

Now, it is estimated to have rocketed to 35 per cent, according to officials.

Cllr Andrew Backhouse, the co
uncil’s cabinet member for environment and transport, said: “It clearly demonstrates the environmental benefit of the scheme and residents’ unwavering and enthusiastic participation.

“We would like to take this opportunity to thank all residents for recycling and it is clear from this estimated figure that everyone is ‘doing their bit’.”

Council recycling development officer Harry Briggs said: “The York and North Yorkshire Partnership has set all local authorities in our area a target of recycling or composting 40 per cent of household waste by 2010.

“To be currently recycling 35 per cent of our borough’s waste stands us in good stead to reach this target and, with further support from residents, exceed this target.

“Since the introduction of the new scheme Scarborough has gone from having one of the lowest recycling rates nationally to being in a good position to exceed recycling targets.

“We have also seen a significant reduction in the volume of waste collected for landfill and the usage of our mini-recycling centre network continues to increase; so much so we are set to expand this network extensively over the coming months.”
