FILEY Lifeboat has been given a cash boost thanks to a woman who has lived to the motto "pennies make pounds".
Shirley McGovern, of Yeadon, Leeds, has had a holiday home in Filey for the last five years and during that time has collected loose change off the street.

She said: “When I was out walking I would always find loose change that people had dropped and over the years I have picked it up and put it into a big whiskey jar, which is now full, so I have decided to donate the money to Filey Lifeboat.”

Mrs McGovern plans to bring the jar full of copper to Filey Lifeboat Day on August 10 and have people enter a competition to guess how much money is inside.

She added: “Every single penny was found in Filey.”

Mrs McGovern does not want to give an indication of how much copper she has collected so as not to spoil the contest, but did say it was a “substantial” amount.
