PEDAL power is coming to Filey later this year when the Tour of Britain cycle race rolls through the town.
The event, now in its fifth year, is expected to attract thousands of visitors and cycling enthusiasts along the route. It starts in London on September 7 and ends in Liverpool eight days later.

The Yorkshire and Humber section of the race – stage
five of eight – starts in Hull and ends in Dalby Forest on Thursday, September 11, passing through Filey at about 1.15pm.

Doubts about Filey’s inclusion were voiced as the organisers prefer to avoid railway crossings – but the town is definitely included in the newly-published route, which also includes Speeton.

The 16 teams of six cyclists will also race through the streets of Scarborough along a route which will see the athletes come into the town on the A165 from Filey and drop down onto Foreshore Road for the sprint section of the leg along Marine Drive.

The entire 104-mile section is expected to take the cyclists about four and a half hours to complete.

Mark Kibblewhite, Scarborough Council’s project development officer said: “The Tour of Britain cycle race brings the opportunity to showcase the area to a massive television audience and offers the chance to see some of the world’s finest athletes for free.”
