PEOPLE in Filey coping with hearing loss have been given demonstrations and advice on the latest equipment available to them.
Roger Keeling, who is the secretary of the Scarborough and District Welcome Ear Association, visited various places including Silver Birches residential home and a lip reading session at St John’s Parish Hall in Filey.
Mr Keeling is hard of hearing himself and it was his own frustrations at the lack of information available about new equipment which persuaded him to get involved in the first place 15 years ago.
He was assisted by Les Arrowsmith, of North Yorkshire County Council social services, and receives support for the sessions from the Big Lottery Fund.
Mr Keeling, of Providence Place, said: “I have been showing them all the different equipment available to help them with their hearing loss. Unfortunately, there is a stigma attached to deafness as people associate it with being old and so don’t want to admit it.
“The response has been quite slow so far but if just one person is able to live a better life as a result then it will all be worth it.”
