YOUNG people in Hunmanby have somewhere new to hang out this summer after the long-awaited arrival of a youth shelter.
The shelter was installed next to the skate park in the grounds of Hunmanby Community Centre on Wednesday – and is already proving a hit.

Parish councillor Lavinia Kirk led efforts by the council to get the structure installed for a six-month trial period after it was moved from Filey, where it was not well used.

The choice of location in Hunmanby followed careful consultation with young people and nearby residents by the parish council and Scarborough’s Safer Communities Partnership.

Parish councillor Liz Mullin said: “We’re really over the moon to get it. We’ve been trying now for seven months.

“I spoke to some of the kids that were down there on Wednesday night with Lavinia Kirk, and they were so happy to get it. It’s somewhere for them to sit down. But they have been told that if they start to wreck it, it will go back.”

If the shelter proves a success, funding could be sought for a permanent structure.
