CONSERVATION volunteers have been working to install new fencing at Filey Country Park.
Moves to fence off part of the park and declare it a nature reserve have been met with criticism from the town council and residents.

Fears were expressed by councillors at Wednesday’s meeting of Filey Town Council that the fence would trap rubbish and do nothing to deter fly-tipping, while hindering emergency access for the coastguard service.

But project manager Alan Tomlinson has defended Scarborough Council over the issue, saying the area at the top of the end of the park will be enhanced and better protected.

Speaking about the ongoing work, Mr Tomlinson said: “We took the decision to re-align the fence and make it less visible and now it is ready for wire.

“The volunteers will return on Wednesday after which we should be in a position to progress the nature reserve designation with Natural England.”
