Memorial trees felled

TWO young trees in Crescent Gardens in Filey were sawn down by vandals overnight on Thursday.

The trees were both planted in memory of loved ones at a cost of £200 each. One of them was a replacement for a young holly tree which had been cut down in a similar attack at Christmas time.

Police said they did not think it was children who were responsible for the vandalism.

Scarborough Council’s trees and woodlands officer Phil Yardley said: “It’s upsetting because these trees are planted on behalf of grieving families, and it’s a Conservation Area. The residents of the Crescent have an issue with the trees, but I don’t believe the people campaigning for them to be removed are involved.”
