FILEY School played host to a VIP this week, when the Mayor of Filey arrived to unveil their new Student Mentor project.
Councillor Richard Walker cut the ribbon at the grand opening of the building, named ‘The Zone’, at a ceremony on Thursday.
The project will see 13 year 10 pupils trained up to act as mentors to the younger members of the school.
The idea behind the project is that they can offer advice and help guide the youngsters, based on experiences they experienced when they were younger.
Students also act as a high visibility presence around school, wearing a photo ID badge. It means youngsters looking for help can approach them for guidance.
The new building is located at the site of the former caretakers house, and was made possible due to National Lottery funding.
Before school, food is served in the building. Feedback from parents and students has so far been incredibly positive.
