A programme of speakers and social occasions has been set out by the 2016 president of the Filey and District Probus Club.

Brian Appleton, who took over the club’s chain of office, aims to encourage more men to join the club to make friends and share their views with other members.

His plans, outlined at the club’s annual meeting, include arranging more activities and raise money for MIND – his chosen charity for his year in office. A tour of the Wold Top brewery is also a date in the diary.

Paul Harrison was installed as vice president.

The outgoing president, Peter Barker, thanked the committee for their year’s work and support.

Earlier in the month, former Scarborough Mayor Godfrey Allanson spoke about his role in establishing the Scarecrow Festival.

It attracts between 10,000-18,000 visitors to the village to admire the artistry and ingenuity of the displays spread displays ranging from individual to group exhibits.

The Probus Club usually meets on the first and third Wednesday of each month to hear talks on a wide range of subjects in the Masonic Hall in Rutland Street, Filey, starting at 10.30am.
