A radical overhaul of rubbish collections

RESIDENTS across Filey and Hunmanby area could face early morning bin collections under new radical plans.

Scarborough Council has announced proposals to pick up refuse between 5am and 10pm from June.

Collections currently take place between 7am and 5pm.

Council bosses have said the move could save £140,000 and collection vehicles will be used in two shifts to reduce the fleet by three wagons.

Andy Skelton, Scarborough Council’s Head of Environmental Services, said: “In response to the drive to reduce costs across the council, we’ve been looking at ways of reducing the costs of our waste collection.

“One way of doing this as noted in our Financial Strategy earlier this year, is to change the operating hours of the waste collection service.

“Under the changes the existing refuse and recycling collections will start earlier, enabling garden waste collections to be completed later in the day using the same vehicles.

“By extending the hours of operation we can reduce the number of vehicles required, thereby reducing our costs significantly.

“Residents will see no change to their actual day of collection.

“Our commitment remains to protect the high quality front-line service we deliver and which our residents value and deserve.”

The council added that from Monday, June 11 it will be asking residents to put their waste and recycling out the night before to ensure their waste and recycling gets collected.

All residents will receive a letter in due course detailing how the changes will affect their collections.
