The campaign to keep Filey Pool open has stepped up, with the town council and Mercury readers backing drives to safeguard the facility.

Mercury readers have inundated our office with slips backing our campaign to keep the pool afloat.

Dozens of campaign forms have landed on our desk this week, with even more support on Facebook.

And at a special town council meeting last Wednesday, the authority showed its support to the Filey Pool Action Group, which has been established in the wake of the shock closure of the pool at Filey School.

In a statement, the group said the meeting had proved to be “extremely positive”.

At the meeting councillors said they supported the governors at Filey School for making the decision, and that with the evidence presented so far, and given the choice between the pool or the youngsters’ education, the right decision was made.

However, at the meeting, the group revealed that it was looking to secure an asset transfer of the pool from North Yorkshire County Council to take over the running of the pool.

And in a statement following the meeting, the group said: “The pool eventually needs to be self sufficient so that it is not a drain on anyone’s pocket and once we have established the costs involved and the potential income the pool could generate we should be able to see if this is viable.

“The children and residents of Filey and district deserve the swimming pool, but we are going to need the full backing of the whole town and district if we are to achieve our goal.”
