A disabled fathers joy turned to agony after his wheelchair, snatched from his home by ”heartless” thieves, was found - only for it to be a total write off.

Last week, the Mercury told the shocking story of how ‘drunken louts’ broke into the communal space of father-of three David Chamberlain’s Queen Street flat, before pinching his £4,5000 electric wheelchair.

The chair, which he needs to play outside with his young children, was found on Friday in the ravine by a council worker who had only just read of his plight.

It was then taken to the council depot to be returned to its owner.

However, upon inspection, the chair was beyond repair.

“It is just completely trashed,’ said a devastated Mr Chamberlain.

“I took it over to Driffield, but there was just nothing that could be done for it.

“The support bars have been completely snapped off, and the connections on the power pack are broken.

“The frame itself isn’t that expensive, just a couple of hundred pounds, but it’s the (Yamaha) power pack that costs the money.”

The chair was insured, but Mr Chamberlain claims that he will only receive around half the value - leaving him with a shortfall of over £2,000.
