Portfolio holder approves ‘cost of death’ price hike
Scarborough Council has voted to increase crematorium fees and costs – also billed as the ‘cost of dying’.
The decision to increase charges for services such as cremations, urns and memorials at the council’s Woodlands Crematorium was made by Cllr Bill Chatt, council portfolio holder for Public Health and Housing.
The recommendations were made to him by council officers for approval, and the increases have generally been around 2.5 per cent.
However, the fee for the strewing of cremated remains where the cremation was not undertaken at Woodlands Crematorium has been increased from £36 to £50.
The authority claim this increase is partly to reflect increased costs but also to encourage local public to use Woodlands Crematorium for cremations where strewing is included as part of the cremation fee.
