Warning over recycling bags

RESIDENTS have been warned to be extra vigilant when putting items in their blue recycling bin after Scarborough's recycling plant had to be shut down when live ammunition was found in the system.

The live shotgun shells were spotted by a worker on the Seamer Carr plant’s hand-sorting section.

The ammunition had resisted explosion while being loaded on to a collection vehicle, compacted, moved by a digger and travelled through fast-moving machinery before being spotted.

Harry Briggs, Scarborough Council’s recycling officer, said: “Over a two-week period the recycling facility has seen a small flow of live ammunition through the plant.

“This is an extremely dangerous situation, potentially fatal.

“If we find evidence linking to whoever has placed these items into a blue bin or sack we would start legal proceedings.”
