Cash-strapped North Yorkshire County Council has rubber-stamped controversial bus cuts, which will see a “vital” service taken off Scarborough’s roads for good.
Despite thousands of signatories opposed to the plans, the authority approved proposals at County Hall to scale back or cut several Scarborough services from April, including the number 4 Ramshill town service.
Steve Siddons is the Ramshill ward councillor who has opposed the plans since they were rolled out to public consultation, and is concerned that the authority’s decision to OK the cuts will have a “devastating” effect on residents.
“These cuts are going to leave vulnerable people isolated – I’m always using that phrase, but there’s no other way about it,” said Cllr Siddons, who added that he is exploring ways of appealing the decision.
One option he thinks may be available to him and fellow campaigners is to call-in the decision, a decision he claims was “scandalous”.
He also feels the council could have spared the Ramshill service, which costs around £40,000 a year to operate, after it decided to reduce subsidies by £2 million.
However, the council says it had no choice but to be ruthless with the axe after Westminster forced the authority to make savings in the region of £77 million after central Government slashed funding.
“These cuts have been imposed on North Yorkshire County Council – not just on the bus subsidies, but across the whole range of services which the council provides,” said County Councillor John Weighell, the chairman of the executive and council leader.
“We have been obliged to take decisions such as this to avoid setting a deficit budget, but we are determined to do everything possible to minimise the impact on individuals.”
