After years of rumours and over 5,000 signatures calling for it, The Scarborough News can exclusively reveal fast food giant KFC is opening a town centre branch.

The Kentucky-based chicken chain has lodged a planning application to Scarborough Council to open its first branch at the empty former Sydenhams unit in Huntriss Row.

If the council gives the plans the thumbs up, it’s expected the new restaurant - which will be located yards from rival McDonalds - will create up to 30 jobs in the town.

After years of false starts, the news has thrilled traders, councillors and fried food fans alike, with Chamber of Trade chairman Janet Jefferson calling it “great news for the town”.

“It’s going to be a big boost for the economy and it will bring people into Huntriss Row,” said Mrs Jefferson, who is also a councillor for the Castle ward.

“It can only add to the footfall, and I think competition is good for the town, bringing added trade to already established businesses.”

The council is currently mulling over the application, which has brought an end to months of rumours it had snapped up the former sports retailer, which closed in 2011.

The company is yet to confirm when it hopes to open.

A KFC spokesperson said: “We can confirm that we’re looking to open a restaurant in Scarborough to satisfy the demand from our fans.”
