Five of Scarborough Athletic Club's young athletes were in track and field action for North Yorkshire Schools, in an Inter Counties Schools match, against Humberside Schools at the Huntingdon Stadium, York.
The meeting was also a final opportunity for athetes to impress the selectors, and thereby progress to county representation at the English Schools Track and Field Championships, which will be held at Gateshead on July 11 and 12.

In the intermediate boys division, 16-year-old Robbie Pickering from Graham School, achieved another lifetime best discus throw of 43.05 metres, which was the winning throw of the match.

He was subsequently selected for the English championships next month.

In the same division, it was a repeat performance of the 3,000 metres race in the North Yorkshire schools championships, when Danny Schofield and Danny Collins dominated the event for a one-two finish.

The two Scalby School pupils were 26 seconds ahead of the field at the tape, with 16-year-old Danny Schofield heading 15-year-old Danny Collins. In unfavourable weather conditions, Collins achieved a lifetime best in the event of 9.18.9.

After the match, Danny Schofield gained selection for the 3000 metres at Gateshead, but Danny Collins will surely be a strong contender for next year.

Another Scalby pupil who has had a very good season, and will also be a strong contender for the English Schools finals next year, is 14-year- old Josh Schofield, Danny’s younger brother.

In the junior boys 1500 metres, he was just .3 of a second behind the winner, who finished over two seconds ahead of him the previous week.

In the senior women's races, in which North Yorkshire Schools were not so well represented, 16-year-old Amy Bridgeman of Yorkshire Coast College, was asked to take on two events, and after winning the 400m, she added a third place in the 800m.

While Amy missed selection this time, the college will still have a representative in the finals, as 18-year-old Jonathan Sharp has been selected on his past form for the 800 metres after he had to miss the qualifiers due to illness.

The sixth member of Scarborough Athletic Club representing North Yorkshire Schools, was 17-year-old Robbie Unsworth of Whitby Community College.

Robbie was a close up second in the 800 metres, just a second behind the winner in a season’s best time.

In addition to the three athletes from Scarborough AC, four other young athletes from Scarborough Borough schools will also be competing for North Yorkshire in the English Schools finals.

They are; Grace Rodgers in the junior girls, James Phillips and James Buck in the intermediate boys, and Anna Grundy in the intermediate girls.
