HOME players did the town proud when Scarborough's Graham School Centre hosted the 2009 North and East Yorkshire Closed Table Tennis Championships.
The two-day event had a high-quality entry, with the men’s competition in particular very strong.

Entries came from Hull, York, Selby and Ryedale as well as hosts Scarborough for both junior and senior sections.

There were several fascinating tussles in the junior events, with some newcomers to the table tennis scene winning through, while there were also plenty of successes for Scarborough and Ryedale.

James Rule of Ryedale won the under-11 boys, while Hull’s Imogen Barber was victorious in both the under-11 and under-13 girls events in which the runners-up were Iona Bartlett of Ryedale and Grace Douthwaite of Scarborough.

Ryedale’s Stephen Temple did well to finish as runner-up to Micheal Fraser of Hull in the under-15 boys.

In the doubles, talented Scarborough duo Keegan Barstow and Macauley Youngson were runners-up to Hull duo Ryan Lo Jacob Barber.

A Hull-Scarborough combination won the under-18 doubles, with Scarborough’s Rebecca George teaming up with Reece Lo of Hull for success.

The senior competition also saw plenty of top action in both the men’s and women’s.

Hull’s Chris Clinton snatched victory from Scarborough’s Martin Lowe in a thrilling men’s singles final, but there was a reversal of fortune in the veterans with Lowe gaining revenge against the same opponent in three sets.

Mick Wilcockson was the winner of the vintage section, and Scarborough’s Rebecca George completed a senior trophy double when she took the ladies and then the mixed doubles with partner Martin Lowe.

The event was a huge success which bodes well for forthcoming tournaments at the centre.
