FILEY School's Year Nine cricket team have reached the quarter-finals of the national Lord Taverner's Trophy.
The Filey aces bounced back from last week’s North Yorkshire Cup loss to book their place in the last eight of the competition with a 70-run success at Foords Hotel Cricket Club.

The senior school team are now aiming to continue their push in the competition, though they will be on their travels in the next round.

Filey shone with both the bat and the ball to make sure of their progression.

Head of PE Terry Ellis said: “It was an excellent performance against a very good side.

“It was also good for the team to bounce back from losing out in the Yorkshire Cup.

“I have taught cricket all over the world, these lads are definitely right up there with the best youngsters I have seen.”

Filey made a tally of 121-4 from their 20 overs.

Aaron Howard made 22 early in the innings, but Filey did slump to 51-3.

A fifth-wicket stand of 70 from Jamie Thompson (33no) and Tom Micklethwaite (23no) resurrected their hopes of the victory.

The Filey bowlers then took over with all-rounder Howard bagging 3-6 and Linden Gray claiming 4-6, figures that included an impressive hat-trick, which helped mop up the innings..

This fine victory was in response to a defeat at Wensleydale in the quarter-final of the Yorkshire Cup.

Filey made a decent total of 137-7 on a poor wicket, with Jack Walmsley’s 26, Howard’s 26 and Lewis Adams’ unbeaten 22 taking them forward.

The Filey side then dipped away from theur usual high standard of bowling and fielding as they allowed Wensleydale to clinch the victory with just two balls remaining.
