newcomers Sun Inn are rising to the occasion in division three of the Sunday League this season.
The pub team was started up during the summer by former Boro and Pikes midfielder Gary Hepples and Rob Ellwood as a way of their friends playing in a competitive league.
Sun player and kit sponsor Eddy Mackenzie said: “We started the team up because we are all friends.
“We didn’t set ourselves any serious targets but we are top of the league and with a bit of luck could do well in the McCain Cup.
The veteran midfielder added: “We have a lot of experience in the side with Pickering’s talented midfield ace Gary Hepples and his brothers Joe and Carl Hepples, myself, as well as Andrew and Tony Rowley.
“Our aim is now to eventually reach the first division and add to the squad next season. In the future we would like to start a reserves side for older players such as myself.
“We play some really good football in what I would say is a very attacking side which shows in our scorelines.
“We can concede four goals but we go and score six which I suppose makes it entertaining to watch and very entertaining to play in.”
Mackenzie added: “We have a great base at the Sun pub. Pauline Hirst, the landlady, always puts on outstanding food after the game, so we would like to say a big thank-you to Pauline.”
Mackenzie has also sponsored the team, with his business, Eddy Mackenzie Decorators, providing the team with training jackets.
He added: “Another big thanks goes out to sponsors Bike IT Cycle Warehouse on Victoria Road, who have provided us with a stunning kit.”
