UNITED Sports are still going strong, eight years after moving up from the Minor League to the Sunday League.
United have made a flying start to the season in division one, and heading into tomorrow’s tough game at leaders Star, they were third in the league table

The team carried on from the Minor League as Swifts, joining the Sunday League in 2002-03.

The following season they switched their base to the Duchess pub and became known as Duchess Swifts.

At the start of the 2006-07 campaign the team changed their base to the United Sports Bar and switched their name accordingly.

Andrew Toal took over as boss – from Kevin Philliskirk – in the club’s second season.

Toal said: “After helping the team to secure two promotions, I stepped aside to allow David Oxley to manage the team in 2008. I switched to the role of director of football, as well as maintaining my duties as club treasurer and secretary.”

He added: “Myself, David, Sam Hyde, Lee Luntley, Terence Breckon, Matty Turner, Zac Poole and Craig Rackham, all played junior football for Swifts and are still involved with the club.

“I’ve been involved longest, and this is my 15th year.”

Toal added: “We moved to United Sports Bar as I knew the landlords John and Alison Langley from when they had the Hole in the Wall pub because I had played darts for their team.

“They asked us if we wanted to be based there and we accepted. They are both excellent as they put food on for us after every game and training session, wash the kit for us, pay our pitch fees for us and they recently held a race night there with Dave Marsden.”
