WARDS FC were making an impact in the Evening News Saturday League second division back in the 1989/90 season.
The team were under the management of Geoff Nock and were playing at the old Wards ground.

Nock said: “We had a good little team going then with the likes of striker Pete Milner banging in the goals while we had a young Paul Robinson in nets and Howard Cooper was our captain and a rock at the back.

“We finished third in the league so were a bit unlucky not to get promotion to the top-flight.

“We also reached an East Riding final and just lost out but I can’t remember who it was against.”

The Wards were still named Wards after moving to Sherburn but took up the Sherburn name a few seasons ago.

Nock had since moved on to manage other teams such as FC Aberdeen and current club Newlands.

Nock added: “Wards was a great pitch and probably the best in the area so it was a shame to see it closed down due to health and safety issues.

“I have some fond memories of managing that side and they were a terrific group of lads.

“Pete Milner is a big mate of mine and we played for a lot of the same teams as each other over the years.”

Beating Wards to the promotion places into division one in the 1989/90 campaign were second division winners Eastfield Reserves and runners-up Ayton.

Eastfield ended up with a total of 37 points from their 22 games played with Ayton finishing on 32 and Wards just two behind on 30.
