Scarborough’s young cricketers were among the rising stars on show at North Marine Road for the Scarborough & District Cricket Development Group’s first-ever under-nines hardball festival.

Teams from South Yorkshire, West Yorkshire and North Yorkshire’s A and B teams battled it out in the tournament, West Yorkshire defeating South Yorkshire in the final after they had seen off the home county’s respective sides.

Scarborough bowler Morgan Gunwell, nine, took four wickets in two games for the North Yorkshire B team, while his club-mate Nicholas Kelly also took four wickets in his two matches for the county’s A team.

Development Group coach John Green said: “There were some top young players on show in this competition, with the North Yorkshire team including five seven-year-olds and a six-year-old, which was Callum Hatton from Sewerby CC.

“His older brother Elliott Hatton also led the North Yorkshire A team, while Scarborough’s Jasper Grace scored 18 and 15 in his two matches for the A team.

“Everybody seemed to have a great day and it is good that the club are now allowing for so many young players to experience action on a top-class ground such as Scarborough CC.”
