There was an exciting start to the Andy Hire Scarborough Evening Cricket League on Thursday night when reigning division A champions Staxton A and last year’s runners-up Flixton A both suffered opening defeats.

Heslerton won by 32 runs at Staxton, their new Aussie batsman Michael Dawson smashing 70 as the visitors posted 152-3, Sam Triffitt chipping in with an unbeaten 26.

In reply Tom Benthall’s 3-24 pegged the defending champions back to 129-4 despite fine knocks by Rob Pinder (58) and Nick Gibson (34).

Ebberston A eased to a seven-wicket win at Flixton A.

Reece Milner’s 4-13 limited the home side to 105-6, Harry Walmsley and Oliver Stephenson the top scorers with 35 and 34 respectively.

Matty Turnbull’s 38 then paved the way for Ebberston’s winning reply of 106-3.

Ian Cousins and Alastair Limb hit 52 apiece as Ganton strolled to a 69-run division B home win against Filey.

The batsmen helped the home side to 140-5, James Richardson then snapping up 3-7 as the visitors limped to 71-7.

Scalby A defeated Scarborough by 44 runs thanks to a fine all-round display by the village side.

Adam Waugh led the way with 33 as the hosts posted 133-7, Steve Rollinson (27) and Dave Holborn (26) also weighing in and Jason Leppington bagging 3-34.

Dan Simpson’s 3-10 ensured the North Marine Road club were never in the run-chase, despite defiant knocks from Josh Mainprize (40) and Tom Bussey (30no) as they ended on 89-6.

Craig Sanderson’s 51 and 4-12 from Dan Simpson also steered Sherburn to a home win by 39 runs against Cayton A.

Cayton’s B team had better luck in division C, hanging on for a nine-run win at home to Cloughton B.

Mark Estill hit 42 and Craig Lyon 25 as the visitors batted first and made 90-7, veteran slow bowler Trevor Davies scooping 3-16.

Lyon then capped a fine all-round performance with 3-38 but Paul Miller (34) and Richard Gibson (29) steered Cayton to victory.

Daniel Bateson claimed 3-6 and debutant Scott Wardman 2-10 as Wykeham B won by five wickets at home to Scalby B.

Wardman hit a six in the final over as the hosts made hard work of passing their low target.
