A WONDER striker from Newlands striker Sean Exley booked his side a place in the final of the Coastal Shellfish League Cup final.
Newlands took on Whitby Fishermen’s Society, who have impressed on their debut season in the Scarborough & District League, sealing wins against first division sides Edgehill and Ayton in the process.
But their impressive run came to an end in this semi-final clash as Shaun Mancrief’s Newlands side squeezed their way past the visitors and sealed their spot in the final against Eastfield St James.
In a scrappy affair, Newlands took the lead after 30 minutes when Exley smashed into the top corner from 30-yards, giving the keeper no chance.
Newlands seized more control of the contest after the break but despite chances falling to Danny Jenkinson and Ben Luntley, they couldn’t add to their tally.
But Exley’s strike was enough for Newlands to book their spot in the final and their delighted manager Mancrief said: “Our back four were superb today. That’s the best I’ve seen them play this season.
“We deserved to win the game, but they are a good, well-organised side.
“Paddy Mancrief played well in midfield and Jamie Gallagher was our man of the match at sweeper. He was superb, but the back four all played well.”
