Sean Exley’s double strike saw Newlands see off a determiend Hunmanby United 3-2 at Flixton to maintain their lead at the top of Division One, while West Pier and Edgehill both eased to comfortable wins.

Exley opened the scoring after he had been fouled by Hunmanby United keeper Jon Hyde and then doubled Newlands’ lead only for Cameron Dobson’s free-kick to beat Chris Dove and give the visitors hope of a revival.

Newlands looked the better side after the break with Gary Hepples showing his class in central midfield, and the superiority paid off when pressure from Aiden Thomas-Foster forced a United defender to loop the ball over the helpless Hyde.

Tom Wilson’s penalty, awarded for a foul by Dove, reduced the deficit for Hunmanby, but Newlands held on to secure the win.

Shaun Mancrief said: “Gary Hepples had a great game and was our man of the match, but we were made to work hard by a good United side.”

West Pier maintained their perfect start to the campaign with an 11-0 romp at home to a depleted Westover Wasps.

Martin Cooper opened the scoring for Pier and Gary Thomas and Billy Logan made it 3-0 at the break.

Logan smashed in another three in the second half, while Cooper scored another two, Neil Thomas, Sam Garnett and veteran Paul Proivins also netted for Pier.

Edgehill cruised to an 8-2 home win against Cayton Corinthians.

Lloyd Henderson put Edgehill in front with a deflected shot but Jake Sands levelled with a penalty.

Centre-back Leigh Watson put Edgehill back ahead with a clever volley at the far post five points before half-time and two minutes later a Harry Holden own goal made it 3-1.

Four minutes after the interval Kurtis Henderson’s header looped over the Cayton keeper to make it 4-1, Jackson Jowett added a fifth and Alex May’s own goal in the 68th minute put the hosts beyond reach.

Daniel Jones made it 7-1 four minutes later, and five minutes from time Mikey Barker netted, Luke Foster hitting a second for Cayton.

Watson was named as the man of the match for Edgehill.

Seamer Sports opened their account for the season with a 5-1 home success against fellow strugglers Whitby RUFC.

Luke Delve, Joe Gallagher, Gary Lawter, Ben Mason and sub Chris Stubbings netted for the hosts.
