Scarborough’s two cycling clubs are shocked by today’s announcement that the Tour de France route will not pass through Scarborough next year.

The sporting community, especially the cycling clubs, were quietly confident that the Tour de France would pass through the town, but today’s announcement confirmed that it would be starting in York, and also taking Harrogate and York and Sheffield but would not be heading to the coast.

Stage one will start in Leeds and pass through neighboring towns and villages before ending in Harrogate.

Scarborough Cycling Paragon Club’s Elaine Ward said: “I am shocked and disappointed that the race is not passing through Scarborough. The seafront would have been a prime location for the Tour de France as there are some great views.”

Stage two will start in York and will end in Sheffield having passed through Hebden Bridge and Huddersfield.

Debbie Richardson, who owns Richardson’s cycling shop in Scarborough and is chairperson of Richardson’s Cycling Club, said: “I am very disappointed but club members will still go away to places in Yorkshire to watch the event unfold.”

The Tour de France will feature a visit to London’s Olympic Park after the two stages that will pass through Yorkshire.

The race last visited the UK in 2007, when London hosted the prologue and the opening stage. It will be the fourth time the Tour has visited Britain after previous visits in 1974 and 1994.

The county has a rich cycling tradition, with Britain’s first Tour stage winner Brian Robinson coming from Huddersfield.
