Thornton-le-Dale-based Bronwen Owen claimed a superb second place at the Junior European Triathlon Cup event in Holland last weekend.

The former Lady Lumley’s School student, who has just completed her first year at Leeds Beckett University, was representing Great Britain Juniors at the competition, which was staged in the Dutch village of Holten on Saturday.

This was a comeback event for teenager Owen after she recovered from a cycle crash in her last Junior European Cup competition three months ago.

After the opening swim section, the Scarborough Athletics Club member was joined by Holland’s Quinty Schoens and they both stormed through the field in the fastest cycling times for this leg of the gruelling event.

Owen then ran the fastest five-kilometre run leg and finished second overall, in a time of 1 hour 5 minutes, of the 40 competitors from eight countries, which was just two seconds behind the winning triathlete, her teammate Olivia Mathias.

Great Britain won the team title with the first three finishers, Sian Rainsley securing third spot, just six seconds behind the Thornton youngster.

Owen said: “Saturday’s event in Holland went really well. The Liverpool Triathlon is next on Sunday August 14,and it is also a qualifier for the world championship.

“But, after being out of action for a while, I may well try to get along to another competition beforehand.

“It has been easy to fit my triathlon training around my first year studying sports science at university.

“Unfortunately the injury I suffered on my bike earlier in the season, in my first European Cup competition in April, kept me out of action for a while.”
