The Scarborough Pindar men continued their Yorkshire League campaign with an excellent 6-3 win at Thorncliffe, in Sheffield.

The visitors probably had their best line-up, with first pair Will Reay and Jonathan Mumby especially strong, and really had no trouble dealing with all the opposition pairs taking their three rubbers quite comfortably.

The match was very much in the bag after the first round of matches when the Scarborough second pair of Jim Mellor and regular partner Steve Mills beat Thorncliffe’s second pair and the third pair of captain Roger Amstell and Mark White did likewise to their equivalent opponents.

Back in the Driffield League, Scarborough Pindar men’s A team in Division One were at home to Market Weighton and had another fine 7-2 win, despite being without Reay.

Captain Mellor with Mills took their three rubbers as did Amstell and Dave Thompson.

Finally, Adam Tildsley and partner Paul Reddish took a very creditable one rubber to finish off the match.

The men’s B team did not fare so wellas they lost 7-2 at a well-drilled Leven side.

This leaves the team struggling at the foot of Division Three.

White and returnee Paul Jackson had a good night and took the two rubbers, while Bryan Edwards and his partner Jon Conyers failed to score losing out on a tie break after having set points.

The team’s final pairing were youngsters Marcus Brown and Tom Hunt who gave an excellent account of themselves on their first outing together but were no match for the opposition’s experienced pairings.

In the ladies section Scalby ladies A team had to travel to high-flying Pocklington A for their Division One match.

They were defeated failing to take a rubber by a very strong team who look likely to take the title.

Jackie Speakman played with Joy Sharples, Sue Jackson partnered Sue Kendal and Jane Stockdale partnered Sally Beaumont.

This was a tough match for the visitors but one result does not detract from what has been a good season for the team winning more than they have lost so far.

Scalby Ladies B team are also going well in division three.

They entertained Middleton at the Station Road courts and had a convincing 8-1 win.

Louise Tomlinson partnered Leslie Wilson and they all their three rubbers as did captain Heather Tiffin and Win Calvert.

Avril Kendal with her partner Barbara Brocklehurst took a creditable two rubbers, losing their third on a tie break.

Scarborough Pindar ladies, in Division Three, bounced back from their unlucky defeat last time out with a very good 7-3 win against Market Weighton B at their Filey Road home.

In a game that was much tighter than the score suggests, the home team won three tie- breaks to seal the victory.

Helen Neal and partner Nicola Guthrie won two rubbers, including one of the tie breaks, and Fiona Gamwell and Zoe Hill also won two rubbers, both on tie-breaks.

Maikke Kerranmans and Jane Hamp had a very successful evening, winning all their three rubbers.

This result should keep the team firmly in line for promotion.

Filey Ladies continued their miserable season travelling to Driffileld LTC with only two pairs, losing out to the home side by nine rubbers to nil.

Captain Sue Robson played with Rachel Philliskirk as her usual partner, the very reliable Sarah Umpleby, is carrying an injury to add further to the team’s woes. The second Filey pair were Liz and Bridget Fenby.
