Scarborough RUFC made the worst possible start to their local derby with high-flying Malton conceding a first minute try.

However they came back with tries from winger Graeme Jeffrey and full-back Ant Coffey in the opening quarter of a gripping Yorkshire One clash at the Gannock.

And although they bossed the half, a Malton try from a catch-and-drive saw them lead 14-12 at the break.

A signature Jordi Wakeham opportunist try converted by skipper Tom Ratcliffe saw the visitors take a 19-14 lead early in the second half.

Malton wing-man Ben Woodhouse levelled the scores at 19-19 in the 56th minute before Ratcliffe re-established the Scarborough lead with a penalty on the hour for 22-19.

A Malton try late in the game saw the men from the Gannock snatch the lead back at 24-22 but a late drama ensued when Ratcliffe had the chance to win the game for the visitors with a penalty.

The Scarborough skipper’s kick hit an upright and Malton went on to narrowly win a cracking local derby.
