The Scarborough & District Golf Alliance Pennant season came to a conclusion at Driffield’s Sunderlandwick course on Saturday.
With South Cliff leading the way in the Pennant standings all they had to do was consolidate this position with reasonable scores.
The players did not let their club down, with four scores from the eight playing entries to count for the Pennant Trophy, South Cliff produced an excellent 25-under-par total of 255 to take the Pennant by five clear shots, 2157, from Malton & Norton in second.
South Cliff players were instrumental in helping their club regain the Pennant with three of the counting four being in the prizes, Gary Thirkell and Craig Salt, 62, Shaun Smith and Paul Dack, 63, and Tony Skingle and Paul Moir, 64.
The winners of the Tankards were Filey pairing Gary Farrow, 12 handicap, and Jonathon Gilbank, 18 handicap, who produced an excellent nine-under par 61.
The other winners were Kirkbymoorside duo John Spanton and Simon Cook, 63, Malton & Norton’s Chris Halley and Dave Midgley, 64, and Driffield’s Steve Lawrence and Andrew Drewery, also with a 64, completing the voucher prizes.
South Cliff, past winners of the Pennant, were looking to make it a double as all eight scores would count toward the Ben Fell trophy.
With all players in from South Cliff, it looked as if they would complete a victorious double, as they were holding a two shot lead.
The final pairings of Driffield were coming down the 18th being the only team who could topple South Cliff’s lead.
With a 65 posted the final card needed to be under par to take the trophy.
They did not disappoint the waiting home players as a 69 would take the Ben Fell for the hosts.
Driffield captain Dave Hornshaw was delighted that his club should be rewarded with a fine victory as they had suffered the most not being able to host an Alliance event due to the extreme winters we have succumbed to in the past.
The final fixture of the season will be at Bridlington Belverdere on Saturday March 24, where the trophies will be presented after the AM/AM shotgun event for the Millennium Trophy with each club entering three teams.
