WONDERFUL Whitby weather saw 42 players take part in a nine-hour round-robin singles competition, last Friday, with North Cliff ace Derrick Swift adding to his long list of successes.
The competition was run by Geoff Watson and Whitby club members and sponsored by Brian and Pauline Thornton. Awards were presented by club secretary Bernard Booth.
After playing in groups of three, the winners progressed to the quarter-finals stage where Tom Mottram (Whitby) beat Clive Page (North Cliff) 21-10, Dave Moment (N Cliff) beat Tony Bland (Borough) 21-18, Swift beat Harry Pearson (Whitby) 21-16 and Eddie Burton (N Cliff) beat Shirley Groves (Eastfield) 21-18.
In the semi-finals Moment beat Mottram 21-16 while Swift beat Burton 21-16, with Swift going on to a 21-13 victory against Moment.
On Sunday there will be a singles merit competition at Hunmanby BC, 10am start.
l Five-times winner of the Gambart Baines Challenge Cup competition Andy Spragg (Chesterfield) was beaten 21-11 in the final of last week’s qualifying round by James Wilcox (Crossgates).
