Fine December weather saw 29 crown green bowlers take part in a singles merit competition at North Cliff BC’s Alexandra Gardens green, on Sunday.

Despite a heavy covering of frost at the start, the bowling conditions were good on a true running green and the standard of play was high throughout.

In the quarter-finals, North Cliff’s Wayne Adams beat Kevin Gates (Whitby) 21-12, Alan Landers (Whitby) beat Pete Thompson (Hunmanby) 21-10, Steve Dover (Whitby) beat Pat Germaine (North Cliff) 21-8 and Phil Todd (Hunmanby) beat Kenny Wale (Whitby) 21-15.

Adams continued his good run by beating former Champion of Champions Landers 21-11 in the semi-finals while current Champion Todd beat Dover 21-13.

With daylight rapidly fading, the final was played with five start on the card, but the quality of play by both Adams and Todd meant the final would not be a quick affair. Todd enjoyed a 10-5 lead before dropping behind 14-13 and trailing 17-18 after 18 ends. It finally finished with Todd the victor 21-19.

Sixteen of the early losers in the main competition took part in a tea-and-biscuits consolation competition and in the final Borough’s Mick Gates beat Eastfield’s Kevin Garside 21-15.

Merits organiser Geoff Watson (Whitby) presented the prizes and reminded players that there will be a break for Christmas on Sunday, with the next merit, a singles competition, at Borough BC on Sunday December 30, with a 9am start.

Scarborough Indoor Bowling Club’s Veterans’ Trophy, which was to have been held on Sunday, was cancelled due to lack of entries. The usually popular event will be held on Thursday December 27, 10am-4pm, as a mixed-triples competition, at a cost of £2.50 each player. Closing date for this is Sunday, December 23. Entry forms for both competitions are available from the bowls centre.

The centre will be open 9am-4pm on Christmas Eve, closed Christmas Day and Boxing Day, open 9am-4pm December 27 to New Year’s Eve, closed on New Year’s Day, and return to the normal 9am-10pm opening from Wednesday January 2.
