Our luck was in when we visited The Horseshoe Inn at Levisham. There’s nothing better than discovering a new place to eat that exceeds expectations. The food was superb with hospitality in equal measures to boot.
The tiny village of Levisham is like an oasis on the edge of the North York Moors. It’s a bit of a steep climb in the car to get there, but once reached you find yourself in tranquil surroundings. If you don’t fancy the idea of driving, you could always hop on the steam train and stop off for a bite to eat instead.
This traditional inn has a friendly atmosphere and it tells you something about the place when you notice that almost every table is reserved. We were lucky enough to have a table near a window which looked out onto the little village green.
The Horseshoe menu offers classic home-cooked food using fresh quality produce, and there are just enough dishes to choose from without being over-faced, accompanied by some tempting options on the specials board.
We opted to share a simple starter of creamy garlic mushrooms on wholemeal toast with a rocket and parmesan salad. The creamy sauce coated the chunky mushrooms without leaving the toast soggy underneath. This was topped with a nice bundle of peppery rocket leaves and grated parmesan which complimented the mild flavour of the mushrooms. Although a classic starter, this is not something we would usually have chosen, but we really enjoyed it. A good start!
For the main course my partner chose the sirloin steak with home-made chips, mushroom, tomato and onion rings. This came with peppercorn sauce (at no extra cost). He was suitably impressed, not only with the presentation of his meal, but the steak was cooked to perfection, and the peppercorn sauce was so delicious that he pulled at my fork, loaded with potato from my own meal, to dunk it into the little jug for me to have a taste.
I ordered the slow roasted belly pork with thyme mash and cider gravy from the specials board. Again, it was beautifully-presented. A huge hunk of tender pork wearing a coat of crackling sat atop a bed of thyme-infused mashed potato and warm chunky apple sauce, surrounded by a rich cider gravy, and finished off with two extra skewer-like pieces of crackling poised on top. This came with a side of seasonal vegetables.
Everything, from the fruity richness of the gravy to the delicate herbs in the potato, was bursting with flavour. The meat was tender and fell apart easily, and the crackling was super crispy.
We were so full we had to share a dessert - orange crème brûlée. I wasn’t sure when I first saw it on the dessert menu, but I have to say the orange flavour worked really well. It had a similar taste to a Chocolate Orange - smooth and creamy with a hint of citrus, and this was served with a generous scoop of ice cream and mixed red berries. It was polished off in no time.
If you’ve not had the pleasure of visiting The Horseshoe Inn I can highly recommend it. The quality of the food and the hospitality speaks for itself.
