South Cliff tramway was earliest of three in Scarborough

editorial image

Crowds gather on the beach below the South Cliff tramway possibly for its opening ceremony in 1874.

This cliff lift – probably the first of its kind in the world and the earliest of three to be built at Scarborough – was operated by pumping water into tanks beneath the two cars as they moved in opposite directions.
