Scarborough Athletic Under-19s picked up their first win of the new Northern Alliance League season when they beat derby rivals Scarborough Football Scholarship 3-0 at Pocklington Town.
Athletic had the better of the opening exchanges and they took the lead when keeper Reece Nestor scuffed his pass out of defence and Liam Mancrief was on hand to poke home after 10 minutes.
The Scholars nearly pulled level though after 18 minutes as a Benny Davis header from a Jack Vernon cross struck the underside of the crossbar and bounced down but was cleared away.
Macauley Lacey hit over from distance for the Scholars and at the other end Ryan Wagstaff did brilliantly to clear at the back post as Athletic finished the half the stronger of the two sides.
The second half was a scrapy affair and quite even both teams struggling to find the killer pass.
Nathan Vernon headed over from a corner for Athletic and Davis again threatened but his lob went well over the bar.
As the game entered stoppage time a poor throw-in from the Scholars allowed Athletic’s Jacob Codling to run through and slot into the far corner.
The Scholars went in search of a late path back into the game, but they were caught as a long ball over the top found Mancrief and he calmly slotted home to seal the win.
The Scholars return to action at Pocklington Town next Tuesday, while Boro’s youngsters travel to Barton Town Old Boys on Wednesday for their next outing.
