Filey feel to Swedish bank

SCARBOROUGH'S newest bank is doing its bit to welcome its customers from Filey.

Handelsbanken, a Swedish bank founded in 1871, opened its 55th UK branch at Scarborough Business Park on Thursday.

The branch is looking to welcome new personal and business customers from Filey, as well as Scarborough, Malton, Whitby, and Pickering.

To mark the opening of the first new bank to open in Scarborough in more than 10 years the Filey and Hunmanby Mercury, and the Scarborough Evening News donated photographs of the local area to decorate the wall of the new branch.

Branch manager Nick Sharples said: "We are very grateful to the Mercury and Evening News for donating the pictures.

"We wanted to have something in our branch that all our customers could relate to.

"The pictures do that perfectly as anyone coming from Filey will be able to identify the town from the pictures immediately, instead of feeling like we are just a Scarborough branch."

The team at the new branch consists of Mr Sharples, corporate manager Paul Fogal, individual banking manager Mike Gould, and document manager Dave Gregory.

Handelsbanken is the first new bank to come to Scarborough since the Royal Bank of Scotland in Huntriss Row opened in the early 1990s.

Mr Sharples said: "Handelsbanken offers what some customers will remember as good old fashioned banking.

"In fact, we often use the strap line 'a trip down memory lane'.

"We live and work in the local community so are in touch with local business people and understand the ups and downs of the local economy."
