Shame on Scarborough Council for nodding through the demolition of the Conservative Club on Huntriss Row.
This must be one of Scarborough’s finest buildings and although shabby could be easily restored to its former glory. Whilst retention of the entire building is probably not possible, due to Premier Inn’s admirable expansion plans, at least the façade could and should be retained.
As usual the council have kow-towed and I do not believe that retention was not possible for financial reasons. Neither do I believe the figure of £500,000 involved.
Premier Inn seems eager to pump money into Scarborough and I don’t think that they would walk away just because of this stumbling block.
Here was an opportunity for Premier Inn to work with a developer, have a magnificent and unique entrance, create a flagship hotel and at the same time save an important part of Scarborough’s heritage. Was this possibility ever pointed out to them? Just think what the brochure could have looked like!
I would urge a re-think on this matter before an important part of our streetscape is lost forever. Why on earth this building was never listed is beyond me.
Coupled with the proposed demolition of the Futurist, this council seem to be hell-bent on destroying Scarborough’s past.
Many towns would give their right arms to possess buildings of this calibre but Scarborough appears to have no sense of history.
Please think again.
