A man aged in his forties drowned in Bridlington harbour on Christmas Day.
The man was spotted by a witness in the water close to The Esplanade, at about 8.15pm.
Despite a joint rescue effort by Humber Coastguard and the RNLI, the man died shortly after being pulled from the sea.
Inspector Steve Beveridge, of Humberside Police, said: "There was a person recovered from the scene in Bridlington.
"The coastguard came out to rescue him but he died a short time later. There appears to be no suspicious circumstances and it appears to be a tragic drowning.
"We don't believe there was a boat because it was very close to The Esplanade. It is not clear how he ended up in the water and it is under investigation.
"A report has been prepared for the coroner."
