As good as gold – that’s the view Yorkshire in Bloom judges were left with of Filey, after the town scooped a prestigious gong at the annual bash.
For the first time in the group’s history, members picked up a gold award, at the ceremony at York Racecourse last Tuesday.
It’s not the first time growers in the town have tasted success, as last year the group reached the final of Britain in Bloom.
And the latest victory is especially sweet for the group, after they were narrowly pipped for the national award last year.
“We are over the moon with this award,” said chairman Marion Wright.
“A Gold from Yorkshire in Bloom is a first for Filey.
“The accolade is a real boost for the town.”
Mrs Wright was full of praise for her band of volunteers, as well as council staff, who she claims always go that extra mile to help the town look its best.
“The gardeners from Scarborough Council led by John Sellers deserve this as they do a wonderful job,” she said.
“We are so proud of our town and we couldn’t be more excited about this award from the Yorkshire in Bloom.”
Mrs Wright also issued a thank you to all of the groups who helped out over the last year, including Filey Town Council and local businesses, who she said have helped to “keep Filey smiley”.
