A MUSTON councillor has spoken of his relief after revealing a family relation escaped unharmed in New Zealand earthquake disaster.

Cllr Godfrey Allanson said his wife’s cousin Ellen Thornburgh and her husband Bryan did not suffer any damage to themselves or their home in Kaiapoi, which is just outside Christchurch, after last month’s incident.

Cllr Allanson said his family were worried when they heard the news of the earthquake after his relations were caught up in September’s incident - which caused structural damage to their home.

He also revealed the couple were due to sort out issues over that damage on the evening of the latest quake.

He added: “They said their property shook for a minute but they told us that they were safe and well.

“That was a big relief for us all.”
