The Scarborough News can reveal why what was once the area’s busiest 24-hour petrol station has been closed for several months.
The Shell Staxton petrol station shut last year to allow new pumps to be put in before work mysteriously came to a halt.
The site has sat dormant like a building site, with local residents unable to get answers.
Ryedale District Council granted Shell permission to redevelop the popular A64 fill-up spot in August.
However, just weeks into the construction a possible water contamination issue was identified.
Work immediately stopped and the Environment Agency were brought in to consult on the best course of action.
A Shell spokesman said:“The fuel tanks at Shell Staxton are to be upgraded.
“Replacing the fuel tanks require the site to be redeveloped.
“During the preparation phase for the planned works, some fuel was found in the ground.
“We are working with the regulator to address this issue.
“The timing of the redevelopment is subject to Local Authority Town Planning Regulatory Permits and pre-construction clearance.
“We regret any inconvenience caused to our loyal local customers.”
Shell has until August 2018 to start the work again.
