DO you know an unsung hero across the Filey and Hunmanby area?
The Borough’s Big Thank You Awards - a partnership between the Mayor of the Borough of Scarborough, the Filey and Hunmanby Mercury, Scarborough Evening News and Whitby Gazette - are back and aim to say a huge “thank you” to members of the community who make a difference to other people throughout the year.
This year, the awards feature a new category, with an individual uniformed group section now part of the celebrations as organisers look to recognise the dedication of groups such as Air Cadets, Sea Cadets, the Scout movement and Boys Brigade.
Other categories include Young Achievers; Good Neighbour; Courage over Adversity; Performing, Artistic or Cultural Endeavours; Care and Support in the Community; Charitable Fundraising; and Heritage and Environment.
Cllr John Blackburn, the Mayor of the Borough of Scarborough, said: was full of praise for the awards.
He said: “This awards scheme is a marvellous way of recognising the individuals and groups who, through selfless acts without thought for themselves, freely give up their time and energy either to help others or overcome personal difficulties.
“People living in this borough will almost certainly know an individual or group who fits that description and I would encourage them to submit a nomination.”
Yorkshire Regional Newspapers’ Editorial Director, Ed Asquith, said: “There are many dedicated individuals in the Scarborough, Whitby and Filey areas who go out of their way to help others and many people who have overcome significant adversity to succeed in their lives – we continuously feature them in the pages of our newspapers.
“These awards are a great way for those people to be recognised and for the communities in this borough to say ‘thank you’.
“I’m particularly delighted that a category for uniformed youth groups has been incorporated and I hope we see lots of interest from the Cadets, Scouts and other uniformed movements.”
