A MOTORIST had a lucky escape after their vehicle smashed its way through a railway crossing barrier.
The A165 was shut around 9.30am on Thursday morning after the safety barrier near the Scarborough Road roundabout was knocked down by a vehicle as a train approached.
Police have confirmed the driver did not stop at the scene.
The damage, which left the barrier strewn across the road, caused huge tailbacks as motorists travelling from the direction of Hunmanby, and apprehensive of crossing the railway line, stopped and waited for assistance.
Traffic travelling from Scarborough was diverted through Filey by police as engineers made the crossing safe.
Police reopened the road two hours later.
